Jean-Louis Petit (1674-1750) was the first director of the Paris Academy of Surgery, founded in 1731. He performed the first trepanation of the mastoid in 1744 as well as the first paracenteses.
Good condition of the binding, book in its full period brown leather, good condition of the covers and spine, upper headcap removed, spine with decorated ribbed bands, red edges, title and volume number in gilt on morocco pieces.
Good interior condition, slight soiling but interior complete and clean overall, work decorated with a portrait of the author as a frontispiece and 31 beautiful folding plates, in particular of surgical instruments, at the end of the work, marbled endpapers.
