Fossilized wood sphere on base. Fossilized or petrified wood “owes its name to “petro” which means “stone” in Greek, or wood that turns into stone.

The petrification process can take years or even centuries to complete.

It is actually wood submerged in stagnant water. Depending on the location, different materials will be incorporated into the wood. This can be volcanic ash, quartz, opal, chalcedony, pyrite or amber.

The wood will literally drink the mixture in which it bathes. Gradually, it impregnates the veins of the wood to the heart, to finally crystallize. This is the silicification process which will constitute the Petrified Wood stone.
